What is Internal Family Systems?
The way I am coming to understand Internal Family Systems (IFS), it offers a gentle way to make sense of the many parts of me. I am not writing from a place of having it all figured out. I am learning as I go, through my own healing journey, and IFS has helped me put words to what happens inside when parts of me feel anxious, guarded, critical, avoidant, overwhelmed, or afraid.
One of the ideas that has stayed with me is that there are no bad parts. Even the parts of me that feel messy, intense, or hard to understand may be trying to protect me in the only ways they know how. IFS invites me to slow down, listen inward, and meet those parts with curiosity instead of judgment.
For me, IFS is becoming less of a concept and more of a practice of healing through CPTSD with compassion. It gives me a way to gently understand the protective parts that formed around pain, survival, and old wounds, while also reconnecting with the steadier Self within me. As I continue this healing journey, I am using this space to share my personal interpretation of IFS, what I am discovering about CPTSD recovery, and what helps me relate to my inner world with more care. If any of this speaks to you, I invite you to explore the posts below and walk alongside me as I keep learning and healing.
